Stinky History

Birds are wreaking havoc on a piece of history.
According to a conservation expert, Penguins are destroying a wood hut that was erected in Antarctica in 1899. The structure was the first building on the continent.
The black-and-white creatures’ excrement is starting to pile up against the hut built by a Norwegian explorer named Carsten Borchgrevink. The guano is reportedly up to three feet deep. “Borchgrevink's hut is literally being buried by guano. It's a stinking affair,” said Nigel Watson, executive director of the Antarctic Heritage Trust.
The brutal weather is also doing a number on the shack and Watson said it would take millions to restore it. And why does he think it’s important to take care of Borchgrevink's creation? “They are the only example of the first human habitation on any continent,” he explained. “This is part of the story of human endeavor.”
About 200 people visit the hut every year and up to 4,000 others make trips to structures erected by Robert Falcon Scott and Ernest Shackleton, who were both British explorers.
